After Andrew Dost's Grammy-winning band fun. attained global success with songs like "We Are Young" and "Some Nights," he re-invented his creative approach and found inspiration in Bossa nova, doo-wop, exotica, and more. Those sonic touchstones, combined with Dost's ear for innovative beats, rich melodies, and boutique instrumentation, has led to his new project, Metal Bubble Trio. With a sound that's both refreshingly new and nostalgically familiar, Metal Bubble Trio operates in the sublime space where cutting-edge and classic collide. With their debut album "Cucumber," MBT have found the sweet spot between crate-digging detail, and being catchy and meaningful enough to soundtrack the moments of your life.

The album comprises nine tracks, including Sour Cherry, Dandelion, Jeff, and the title track Cucumber. Notably, Holding Onto features Chicago-based rapper theMIND, highlighting the group’s collaborative spirit.

On February 1, 2025, Metal Bubble Trio celebrated the limited-edition vinyl release of Cucumber at The Alluvion in Traverse City, Michigan. The event featured a live DJ, exclusive merch, cucumber-themed food, and the first opportunity to purchase the freshly pressed vinyl. This special edition includes a One of None chip, which, when tapped with a phone, grants listeners exclusive insights into the album’s creation, the band’s artistic journey, behind-the-scenes content, music videos, and merch.

We asked Andrew a few questions about Cucumber and the tech behind it.

Q: What excites you the most about One of None’s technology in relation to this album?

A: I see Metal Bubble Trio less as a band, and more as a sort of fluid entity that can encompass a lot of different things I do. It could be a video production, a short run publishing house for the zines and books I make, a jazz ensemble, a Gorpcore clothing company, a 60s British Invasion-style band, and so on. I feel like the One of None technology aligns perfectly with that vision - it’s more or less a limitless technology that creates a vessel for many ideas. Even in the initial quick buildout, it provides a clear home for a lot of different MBT-related things, and I only see that growing as the band continues to make things and evolve.

Q: What parts of the Metal Bubble Trio Product Profile are you looking forward to the most?

A: I’m looking forward to having a place to direct the first 500 people who purchased the album. It means they are curious about the band, and have made some kind of investment in the music, on an emotional and financial level, and that’s the kind of listener I am. I want to dive into an album I like, and this provides easy access to information, videos, merch, all the stuff that I want to know about when I get into a band. So that’s the aspect that’s driving a lot of my ideas for it now - it’s a place for people to get access to a sort of digital world that goes beyond social media posts.

Q: How do you feel One of None’s technology can enhance the power of music?

A: Music for me is always about more than just music. It’s style. It’s personalities and comedy and heartbreak. It's community. For me, One of None represents all those things - it’s a point of entry to a world beyond what you hear recorded. That might mean snippets of voice notes that turned into songs. It might mean the chance to ask questions about the process. It could be unreleased tracks or a way to connect with other people who want to go deeper into the work. One of None almost seems to me like the giant underside of an iceberg below the surface of the water. The album is, of course, hugely important to me. But it’s also the culmination of many smaller moments, many people, lots of hard work, tangents that don’t get followed… so many different things that One of None’s technology can make available for someone who wants to go down a rabbit hole.

Q: Lastly, what is your favorite track on the album?

A: I think “Holding Onto” with theMIND - not only do I just like the song a lot, but I think it represents a lot of what I want MBT to be - collaborative, open-ended, shifting from its original intent into a new form that is better than I could have achieved alone.
